Once you try this simple French Toast recipe, you will quickly find out why it is such a weekend breakfast staple in our house.  There are no “magic” or “secret” ingredients, just an approachable recipe that turns out a great breakfast dish every single time.

just a few common pantry items, eggs and milk

Why should you make this recipe:

  • French Toast is a classic breakfast item and most people I have met just kind of wing it with their recipe.  This recipe ensures that you make consistently delicious French Toast every time.
  • There isn’t really a secret ingredient, however adding all purpose flour really helps to make a thin batter that helps the spices adhere to the bread a bit better
  • This recipe will reliably batter 8 thick slices of bread and possibly 10 or more if you dip your bread quickly

What to serve with your French Toast:

  • Any breakfast meat will work, but we love bacon to complete this meal
  • Adding sliced fruit will make you feel a little less guilty
  • French Toast is served most times with maple syrup and powdered sugar sprinkled on top

Ideas for customizing this recipe:

  • Try different types of bread; we have been using “Hawaiian” style thick sliced bread and the sweetness added to this French Toast is outstanding.  Challah bread will work as well as other thick sliced breads
  • Change up the ratio of spices; some people do not like nutmeg or never have it at home because they never use it. Leave it out if you want, this recipe will turn out just fine.  If you like more or less cinnamon or vanilla, adjust for your individual tastes.

A Note about Spices

Freshly grated spices are always best, especially with nutmeg.  Having said that, I rarely (like never) use freshly grated spices for this or any other recipe.  I just don’t have time.  I’m cooking at home for my family, not a high end dining establishment.  It’s not like pre-ground spices taste bad, but fresh is just better.  Use what you have and don’t feel judged.

Tools needed for French Toast:

  • French Toast is relatively straightforward as recipes go, but a griddle makes cooking a large breakfast like this a little smoother.
  • A good set of tongs are invaluable to the home cook, and this set is great for non-stick surfaces and makes dipping the bread in and out of the batter extra easy

How to make 3 Step Simple French Toast

In my experience, following this procedure of cooking produces the smoothest batter and most even cooking!

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly whisk all of your dry ingredients
  2. Add your eggs and vanilla to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth
  3. Whisk in your milk until you have a very thin batter…that’s it!!

My setup for French Toast

At this point, you can make your French Toast:

  • If using a griddle, preheat it to medium heat
  • The easiest thing to do is to pour your batter into an 8×8 baking dish.
  • Using your tongs, dip both sides of the bread into the batter
  • When taking your bread out, lightly pull the bread against the walls of the baking dish to remove any excess batter
    • You can let your bread soak for a bit and act as a sponge for all the deliciousness in the batter, but the number of slices you can cook will drop dramatically
  • Generously butter your griddle and cook on both sides until golden brown
  • Serve and enjoy!

*pro tip; once cooked, lay your French Toast slices on a cookie sheet and place in a 200° oven to keep warm*
